There’s a rule in the world, when a man expects something from someone then he also fears that person and if one expects something in return then one tries to make the person (from whom there is expectation) happy. A shopkeeper makes every effort to make the customer happy. People of Imaan were taught through the Ambiya Alayhimussalaam that man has to return to Allah and will be examined for his life (how he spent his life) and then he will be rewarded (accordingly). When this is the worry of a man (being examined after death and rewarded accordingly) it is then that he strives to ensure he does not make Allah unhappy and this is peity (Taqwa).

A complete human is one who has knowledge, purity of deed, one whose physical appearance is correct (as per Sunnah), heart (spititual) is cleansed, one whose intentions are pure and intentions do not become pure until one does not have the fear of standing in front of Allah (in the day of judgment)
– Shaykh Sayyid Muhammad Talha Qasmi Naqshbandi (d.b)
The first step towards cleansing the heart is to true repentance, the second step is to decide to not sin again. The devil conspires to make you sin through various ways therefore the third step is to have a strong associated with our elders (Mashaaikh) to seek advise from them just as we seek advise from a medical doctor for our physical ailments much in the same manner we need to seek advise from spiritual doctors (Mashaaikh) for our spiritual ailments.
